.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Steven Gerrard is confident Liverpool have the mentality to reach another Champions League final and has warned Chelsea that the Reds will do whatever it takes to make sure they are in Moscow on May 21.
The Reds skipper believes his side can get the right result to take Stamford Bridge when they face the Blues in the first-leg at Anfield tonight, and insists their never-say-die spirit will see them travel to London hopeful of progressing - even if they don't secure an advantage this evening.

"I personally have a hell of a lot of confidence in us going out there and doing what it takes to get to another final," said Gerrard.

"We know what will make for a good result in front of our own fans to take to London next week. We know what is required to get us to Moscow in May.

"It's not rocket science really. We want a clean sheet and a lead. One goal would be magnificent, a couple would be something else. But even if we don't get that, that doesn't make us underdogs because this team never knows when it is beaten."

Liverpool produced the comeback of all comebacks when they won the trophy against AC Milan back in 2005 and Gerrard feels it is that experience and spirit in adversity that could see them lift what he feels is the biggest trophy in the game, once again.

"Some teams wilt and chuck it when the going get tough. That’s not the case with us," he said.

"We'll battle and scrap and believe in our ability to do whatever it takes. It's the biggest trophy there is and we want it. I don't think there is a player, manager or supporter of any team in Europe who wouldn't say it is the pinnacle of football.

"That is why we are desperate to win it and why our fans are too. They will give us a boost again because there aren't many places in the world that have such an intimidating atmosphere as Anfield, that have such an effect on visiting teams and that's a fact."

The Reds have already beaten Chelsea on two previous Champions League semi-final occasions and despite the fact they will have to face a second leg at Stamford Bridge this time around, Gerrard is confident Rafael Benitez's men will have nothing to fear.

"Stamford Bridge is a big stadium, but it's got nothing of the aura that Anfield has and it certainly won't intimidate us in the slightest," said the midfielder. "If we have to go there and finish the job then we believe we will.

"We need to be brave, bold and clinical and if we do that, we can start thinking of Moscow. Chelsea will be wary of us and what we’re capable of.

"They'll have seen the Arsenal game and be in no doubt of the size of the task ahead."

 Comments

RAFA: WE MUST BE PATIENT TONIGHT

liverpoolfc.tv/news

Rafa Benitez has warned his players they will have to be patient to prevail in what has become one of the cagiest encounters in football.
The Anfield boss expects a similar clash to the 2005 and 2007 semi-finals against Chelsea, when just three goals were scored over 390 minutes.

He said: "We are playing well at home and away but Chelsea are strong defensively. It will be difficult. We have been talking today and yesterday about how we must do our job, play well and be patient. We spoke about patience against Inter Milan and in that game we scored two goals in the last five minutes.

"We must play well and, if possible, keep the ball. We must not make mistakes and must control the game.

"These kind of games against two top sides at this level, it's the small details that make the difference. I always say it but it's true. The difference is key players in key moments.

"Our supporters are very clever, they know it will be difficult at Stamford Bridge, so they know how important it is to be behind us tonight."

While Benitez expects a sense of déjà vu tonight, one difference this time round is the fact the second leg is at Stanford Bridge.

Though admitting it gives Chelsea an advantage, the Spaniard points to another new factor which could prove crucial – Fernando Torres.

He said: "We have some experience of difficult away games. People were talking about needing to win in Marseille and in the end we scored four goals.

"We have the quality to score in any stadium.

"The players know that, even if they are not playing well, we have players who can score goals. The team is playing well and we have confidence because we know Torres can create something."

Much has been made of the difference in managerial styles between Avram Grant and predecessor Jose Mourinho.

For Benitez though, little has changed in terms of the task facing his players.

He said: "They are a good team. They are very good, well organised, balanced, good in attack and defence, and good at set pieces and counter-attack.

"So, more or less they are the same as before. I don't need to analyse the style of one manager or the other. The players and the team are more or less the same. They were in the final of the Carling Cup, are in the race for the title and have got to the semi-final of the Champions League, so they are in a good position."

 Comments

I'm back

Steven Gerrard thinks Liverpool can benefit from Arsenal's renewed title-hopes when the two sides go head-to-head in the Champions League.
At one point last weekend it looked as if the Gunners were out of the chase having fallen 2-0 behind at Bolton with a man sent off.

However, Arsene Wenger's men completed a remarkable comeback to win 3-2 and leave themselves just six points behind leaders Man Utd.

Gerrard thinks the result can help Liverpool ahead of Wednesday's quarter-final first leg.

"If Arsenal hadn't beaten Bolton, maybe they'd have only had one thing to play for this season and that could have made it more difficult for us," said the Reds captain.

"But with them still having half a chance in the league, maybe that could distract them a bit.

"Before the draw was made, we'd have been looking to get a team from Europe rather than another from the Premier League.

"But you get what you are given and to win the European Cup you have to beat the best.

"When we won it in 2005, we had to beat all the best teams to win it and I'm sure we're going to have to do that again if we want to win it this season."

Liverpool were knocked out of both the League Cup and FA Cup by Wenger's men last season and have yet to win at Arsenal during Rafa Benitez's tenure.

But, having reached two of the last three Champions League finals, Gerrard insists he and his teammates have the confidence to progress.

"We're a good side in Europe and we're always confident no matter who we come up against that we are going to qualify," he said.

"I think the other teams are more worried about us because we've proved in the last two or three years that we're one of the best teams in the competition.

"We've got nothing to fear. We just need to go there and give it our best shot."

Sandwiched between this week's first leg and the return at Anfield is Saturday's league clash at the Emirates.

Gerrard added: "The Champions League games against Arsenal are going to be different to the league game we have there.

"We found the Champions League games we had against Chelsea were different to the Premier League games, with it being a cup competition and not for three points.

"But we know we are in for two really tough games."

Liverpool go into the game in confident mood after opening up a five-point gap on Everton in the race for fourth with victory over their neighbours on Sunday.

"It had been a difficult week, having to swallow the defeat we had at Manchester United," said Gerrard. "But Sunday was all about bouncing back and making sure we could take a positive into Wednesday's game at Arsenal.

"After a big derby win the fans are happy and the players are happy. We know it will be a really tough game on Wednesday but now we will be going into the game with confidence.

"Our aim now is to consolidate this fourth position and go all the way to Moscow. That's our focus."

 Comments

GUNNERS WILL FEAR EL NINO

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Arsenal will be worried about how to stop goal machine Fernando Torres, according to Reds boss Rafa Benitez.
El Nino has so far amassed 28 goals in his debut season, including four in the Champions League.

Now Benitez is backing him to fire Liverpool past Arsenal and into the semi-finals of the Champions League.

"Arsenal will know that Torres is on fire and is scoring goals and will be a problem for them," Benitez told a press conference at Melwood.

"Fernando also knows that if we play well he will score goals, so he will work hard for the team. As this is a European competition he wants to play well and score goals.

"He has a great mentality and is very competitive, but against the top sides he must be focused and have confidence in himself because against the best defenders it will be more difficult."

Torres is not only bearing down on Anfield's goalscoring records, he's also out-stripping anything he achieved during his time with Atletico Madrid.

Benitez puts this down to Liverpool's formation.

"In Spain he was playing on his own up front. He was going to wide areas and was working hard to receive the ball and go against defenders," he said.

"Here he has Steven Gerrard, Ryan Babel and Dirk Kuyt behind him, so he can play higher. That is the reason why he has scored more goals."

Meanwhile, Benitez has confirmed Javier Mascherano will start at the Emirates on Wednesday after his league suspension.

He said: "Javier will be available for the first leg, he will start this game.

"He was playing well before the suspension and there is no doubt he will be important for us at Arsenal."

Either Alvaro Arbeloa or Fabio Aurelio also looks set to return after both were rested for the Merseyside derby.

Benitez said: "We wanted to protect one of them, but I will not make that decision public at the moment."

 Comments

TORRES PUTS REDS FIVE CLEAR IN FOURTH

www.liverpoolfc.tv/match

Liverpool have moved five points clear of Everton in the race for Champions League qualification after a 1-0 win in the 207th Merseyside derby.

Fernando Torres bagged his 28th goal of the season to secure victory and put the Reds firmly in control with six games remaining.

The result, which makes it eight victories in nine, also sends Rafa Benitez and his squad to the Emirates with confidence firmly restored following defeat at Old Trafford seven days ago.

Benitez was asked at Friday's pre-match press conference whether he'd rest players today ahead of Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first leg. Unsurprisingly, the journalist was given short shrift.

The race for fourth is clearly as important to Liverpool's future as progression in this season's Anglo-European Cup, so it was no surprise to see El Nino line up ahead of Steven Gerrard in a 4-2-3-1 formation which, until last Sunday, had yielded seven straight victories.

The only big-name absentee was Javier Mascherano, who is still waiting to hear whether his one-match suspension following last weekend's red card will be extended.

The match began amid the usual banter between both sets of supporters. The Kop spent the opening minutes reminding their city cousins they're 'not Scousers anymore' due to the Toffees' proposed relocation to Kirby.

It wasn't long before the Reds were on top on the pitch, too. Seven minutes, in fact. That's how long it took Torres to get Liverpool's 100th goal of the campaign.

The chance came after Xabi Alonso robbed Yakubu on the edge of the visitors' box before a Dirk Kuyt touch sent his strike partner through. Tim Howard made himself big but Torres gave him no chance with a cool finish into the bottom corner.

The number nine has now scored in six consecutive home games, a club record he shares with Fred Pagnam (1919), Roger Hunt (1964), Ian Rush (1983) and Michael Owen (1999).

Next he turned creator, leaving Joseph Yobo dizzy with his footwork before teeing up Kuyt. It wasn't an easy take for the Dutch international, but he eventually managed to get a shot in only for Tony Hibbert to throw his body in the way.

Kuyt might have got his head on a dangerous corner from the skipper minutes later but, with the net gaping, the ball evaded him by inches.

By this stage, Everton officials sitting in the press box were commenting that it seemed as if Liverpool had more men on the pitch. Their side's frustrations were certainly starting to show. Howard Webb, a referee who chooses common sense over pedantry, was forced to book both visiting central midfielders for rash challenges inside 20 minutes.

It should have been 2-0 on 28 minutes when the recalled John Arne Riise flew down the left before crossing towards Ryan Babel. The winger's concentration just seemed to slip momentarily, however, and the chance was gone.

The second very nearly did come six minutes before the break when Gerrard, who'd just delighted the majority of Anfield with a chainsaw of a tackle on centre-back Phil Jagielka, smashed a 25-yard volley against the post.

A satisfying first half, then, with perhaps the only gripe being Liverpool's failure to make dominance count beyond the opener.

David Moyes brought on Yakubu, Mikel Arteta and Steven Pienaar for the second half. At least, that's what anyone not watching the first closely might have thought, the trio proving totally ineffectual in the opening 45.

'The Yak', who Jamie Carragher described as one of the Premier League's best finishers in the matchday programme, even got a shot in on 50 minutes, though the whistle had already gone for an indiscretion.

Leon Osman was next to threaten with a smart header from Arteta's in-swinging free-kick. Thankfully, it hit the Kop hoardings, though the visitors were starting to get foothold in the game.

It took an expertly-timed tackle from Sami Hyypia to thwart Yakubu in the box on the hour mark.

At the other end, Lucas had a decent hit blocked by Yobo, though chances seemed harder to come by as Everton pushed for an equaliser.

Moyes again tried shuffling his pack, Leighton Baines replacing Phil Neville, who snatched his tracksuit top in anger as he made his way off to rapturous boos.

If anything, the changed put a stop on the Toffees as an attacking force, with the only other chance of note falling to Kuyt, whose 20 yard curler was deflected narrowly wide by Fernandes.

 Comments

TORRES CAN GIVE REDS THE EDGE IN DERBY

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Kop hero Jimmy Case believes Liverpool have the edge over their Merseyside rivals Everton and has singled out derby debutant Fernando Torres as the key man for the Reds on Sunday.
The Reds legend played in many derby games during his illustrious career at Anfield and he said Everton's defenders will not be relishing the prospect of facing the 27 goal striker.

"The derby is always very special and this is a big game with fourth place up for grabs," Case told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"The key man for me will be Torres. He always gives Liverpool the edge every time he plays. He is a superb player and the way he gives them an extra dimension with his pace and forward running and once he sets off in his stride running at the opposition he is so difficult to catch.

"Liverpool have got such a hectic programme at the programme and it doesn't get much bigger than playing Manchester United last week and then follow it up with games against Everton and Arsenal.

"Sunday's derby itself takes on a little bit of extra dimension with both teams wanting that fourth spot.

"I think Liverpool can do it and I am backing my former club to win the derby because they will have a reaction to that disappointing defeat at Manchester United. We have got to stand up and be counted in the derby and every player will have to play to their full potential.

"It's disappointing that Javier Mascherano can't play in this game and I think it's a big loss because he has been playing really well. He has been in great form and would be relishing a game like this.

"Everton have got problems too though and they will miss the injured Tim Cahill. He is the one that you wouldn't want to play against because he has this ability to come up with a goal and ghost into good positions. He is a big loss to Everton.

"We have just got to look after ourselves and win the game. It would be a good position for us to have a five point lead over them but there is still a lot to be done before we secure that fourth spot.

"Everton have come on a lot this season and their league position says it all. There could still be some twists and turns but for me Liverpool are the better side and have more strength in depth."

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Rafa Benitez has revealed that Javier Mascherano has been fined by the club following his sending off at Old Trafford last weekend.
To watch the press conference click here>>

The Argentina international today admitted an FA charge of improper conduct, which was one of the key issues discussed at this afternoon's pre-match press conference at Melwood.

Here's what Benitez told reporters in full:

Rafa, I understand Javier Mascherano has admitted his misconduct charge. Can you tell us any more?

We were talking and the player has apologised for his reaction after the sending off. He knew after the game he made a mistake, it's clear. Now we are waiting for the hearing.

How worried are you that he could face a bit of a spell out now?

Mascherano is a fantastic professional and the club has no red cards this season. It was a special situation, everyone was surprised but he knows. We have fined the player and he accepted that and asked for it to go to charity.

Players like Adebayor have been given a one-match ban for similar incidents – is that a precedent?

Yes, we know the situation with other players and the lawyers are working. Now we have to wait.

Are you worried that other referees could now follow the example of Steve Bennett, especially in a derby when passions run high?

I don't think so. People talk about the number of red and yellow cards in a derby but the players know how to do things. They know they must fight and tackle but they know they have to do things properly. I don't think we will have big problems.

Have you had to speak to your players?

Not really, because like I say we have a fantastic disciplinary record this season. We just have to approach the game in the same way as the previous games. Always I say the same: try to play with your heart and your head.

I wondered if you'd spoken to Steven Gerrard and told him to keep an eye on the players on the pitch?

No, I don't think we need to change many things. The behaviour of the team through the whole season has been really good.

Is self-control the key, because we saw Everton's passions maybe got the better of them last time and maybe they felt a few decisions went against them?

I don't agree that the decisions went against them. If you analyse the whole game you can talk about every decision for a long time. Maybe people were thinking these things because the decisions happened at the end of the game.

But that is what they felt at the time...

Yes, we felt the opposite.

Is the key, then, retaining self-control for 90 minutes?

The key and the message for everyone is to try to support the team, and to try to be good professionals.

Last time you took Steven Gerrard off because you felt he was using too much passion...

You know when you have a local player in a derby it's sometimes more difficult. When you have a player with quality, it's really important they use this quality. With Steven Gerrard, he has quality and passion, and if he can use both it's much better for him and the team.

Will this game decide who finishes fourth?

No, I don't think so. We will need to keep winning games if we want to be sure of finishing in the top four.

Five points would be a nice cushion, though...

Yes, it would be a good advantage but we have some important games, especially away, so we'll need to keep working hard until the end.

David Moyes has indicated there is less pressure on Everton because fifth place would still be a massive achievement for them. Is the pressure on you this weekend?

It's normal for a game like this for some managers to say things like this.

Who is the pressure on?

All of us want to win. They want to win, we want to win.

Do you enjoy derbies, Rafa?

I enjoy the big games, especially if we win. We prepare every game by analysing everything, but you know in a derby that small details can be really important. I like to play these games – and I would like to play in these games, but I can't!

Is there a temptation to rest players ahead of Arsenal?

No.

How difficult is it to weigh up the situation with such a big Champions League game coming up?

It's difficult to talk about this because for the whole season we've been talking about changes and rotation, but this depends on the manager and whether you win or not. But anyway, we will try to put out a strong team and win. We know finishing in the top four is really important if we want to be in the Champions League next season.

Has the referee got to take into account how big an occasion this is?

Normally we don't talk about referees before the game, and afterwards we try not to say too much.

How is Fernando Torres? Will he be fit?

Yes, I think so. I don't know how to say it in English, but let's say Materazzi was giving him some gifts! But he is okay. He is fit and was training.

What about the England players?

Yes, they are okay. They have some knocks too but I think they will be okay. All the international players arrived back okay. Some of them were late but I think they will be okay.

There's talk around England that some players can't reproduce their club form at international level. Is that a fair criticism?

I don't know. I am concerned about the players in my team. If I don't talk about other managers and other teams, I will not talk about how they perform for the national teams.

Will what happened at Man Utd be added motivation this weekend?

I think we approached the game against United with a lot of confidence. We can't change the result and we are really disappointed, but the best thing for us is to be able to play a derby. We can be really focused because it's a fantastic game for the players. When you play against other teams, you never know if the players will be focused. But in this game you know.

Does one result like at Man Utd affect the confidence after the run you've been on?

No, I don't think so. The team has confidence and we have a lot of confidence.

What do you make of what Everton have done this season? Are they getting closer to Liverpool?

In terms of points they are having a good season, it's true.

Is it the kind of rivalry you welcome when two teams from the same city are doing well?

No, I prefer to be top of the table.

What did you make of the comments by George Gillett today?

The chief press officer told me but I am really, really focused on the derby.

Any further team news?

No, the rest of the squad is fit. Agger is out and Kewell picked up an injury, but I don't think that will be serious.

How long is Harry likely to be out?

We don't know exactly. He is coming back and we will see with the doctor.

Are you disappointed with that?

Yes, the international breaks are never good for managers.

Are his chances of getting a new contract diminishing?

He has to work hard in every training session.

Do you think the derby game has changed over the years?

I think any game in football is difficult, especially a derby. If you want to win a derby you need to work really hard until the last minute. Two or three years ago we were down to 10 men but could still have scored more goals. Anything can happen in a derby.

The make up of the teams, though, there's fewer locals lads...

We have some local players with passion and maybe they can transmit that to the other players. But the foreign players like Skrtel and Torres, maybe before the game they will prepare as normal, but in the game they will feel something.

Javier Mascherano was really fired up last Sunday. How much are you going to miss his intensity in this game?

Everybody knows he was playing really well. Maybe we will miss the player but we have enough quality in the squad and will try to manage.

Where does this game rank among the massive games you've played since you arrived?

If you play a final, that's the most important game. But a derby is just below a final.

What is your comment on all the things going on off the pitch at the club?

If we win against Everton, everyone will be happy.

The Barcelona manager's job – you've been linked to it. Michael Laudrup has also. Do you think he is a candidate?

I think Rijkaard is a fantastic manager who is doing a very good job.

 Comments

RAFA SEEKING HACKETT TALKS

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Rafael Benitez today admitted he will seek talks with referees chief Keith Hackett following Javier Mascherano's red card at Old Trafford.
Mascherano will serve an automatic one match ban for his dismissal on Sunday - ruling him out of this weekend's Merseyside derby - but he could face an even longer spell on the sidelines if the FA hit him with a further suspension.

Benitez made no secret of his disappointment over Steve Bennett's decision to send Mascherano off for dissent at the weekend, and he's now keen to enter into a dialogue with Hackett to find a 'solution' to the problems which occurred in Manchester.

He said: "I would like to speak to Keith Hackett because it is important that we find a solution.

"At Liverpool, we respect the game, we respect the rules and we respect the referee, and it is important to remember that Mascherano was the first Liverpool player to be sent off in the league this season."

John Arne Riise, meanwhile, believes Bennett could have taken the heat out of the situation by speaking with Steven Gerrard before brandishing the red card at Mascherano.

He said: "I don't know what was said (between Mascherano and Bennett) but I feel that the referee should have called Steven Gerrard to him before this.

"Mascherano boiled over, but he will learn from this. He is an intense player who loves the club and loves to win, therefore he probably got a little too hot in that situation."

 Comments

NO SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR RONALDO

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Rafa Benitez insists he isn't devising a masterplan to stop 33-goal winger Cristiano Ronaldo during Sunday's north-west derby.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon, the Anfield boss explained why he won't worry too much about the Portuguese star.

Here's what Benitez told reporters at Melwood about this and the week's other footballing issues in full.

The fans see this as the biggest game of the season, do you?

One of the biggest, I think so. We have important games coming up but the rivalry between these two sides means it is one of the most important.

How important is this game to your season?

It is a crucial time. If we win, we will be closer, then we can continue trying to win every game and get closer and closer. It will be really difficult to get closer to them, so we need to think about fourth position and the fight against Everton.

Are you still in the title race?

I am thinking about winning three points, nothing else.

But would a win on Sunday put you back in it?

I said before: if we win, we can be closer, and then maybe afterwards we can be more optimistic.

This 'Grand Slam Sunday' could really tighten things up in the top four, though?

Yes. It depends on the result – it could make it interesting for the rest of the season. We will try to do our job.

How much attention will you pay to the other game on Sunday, between Chelsea and Arsenal?

Not too much. We just need to think about our game. United are a very good team, so that's enough to think about.

And you have still to beat Man Utd in the league Rafa, haven't you?

Yes. We were really close in a lot of games but have sometimes had really bad luck, like conceding in the last minute after missing a lot of chances. But this is another opportunity.

Is stopping Ronaldo the key?

Maybe stopping Torres! No, they have a lot of good players, so it will be difficult if you just think about Ronaldo. We have to think about all of them.

With 33 goals already this season, is Ronaldo the best player in the world at the moment?

I think he's in form but Torres is too. The other day Ferguson was talking about referees having to protect Ronaldo. I think it's important to protect players like Torres, Ronaldo and all players with quality.

Jamie Carragher described Torres as the best striker in the world yesterday. Would you go along with that?

I think he's a very good striker. He's also very young - 24 today. He can improve but is playing very well, so we're really pleased with him.

How big an achievement is it to score 20 league goals in your first season?

It's always a fantastic achievement whether it's in the first, second or third season, but to do it in the first is really good for him because he's a new player who's had to settle down. I think he can continue improving and working hard, and that will be really good for the club.

Can you compare him to any Liverpool players from the past?

Everyone is talking about a lot of players but I think it is too soon. In football you need to wait some years, then you can say someone is a star. Now he is a very good player, a good prospect and he can get much better in the future.

At United the comparison is being made between Ronaldo and George Best, and there's a debate as to who is better. Do you have a view on that?

A good player 10 years ago could be good today, but football is different. The game is different physically and is much faster now. You can talk about one player being good or another, but in this case I think both are really, really good.

What do you put your recent run of good form down to?

I think we have enough confidence now to keep winning, but it will be a big test against United because they have a lot of good players. We have confidence, we are playing well and if we keep playing at the same level we don't need to fear anyone.

How much of a help has it been to Torres to have Steven Gerrard playing so well behind him?

It's always important to have an understanding between players, especially up front. We now have four offensive players playing well. The understanding between Gerrard and Torres is good and it's really difficult for teams to stop both.

Is their understanding something that comes naturally?

Yes, I think so. They trained for months and now they are always looking for one another. It's easier for them now because both are scoring goals – they are happy on the pitch.

And it's such an important period of the season for you now with five massive games back to back?

Yes, clearly. The derby against Everton will be an important game as well as the three games against Arsenal, so, as I say, it is a crucial time.

Are you just playing for that fourth spot with Everton or is there a sense you can go further than that?

You know my answer. We are trying to win the next three points and afterwards we will see the position in the table. You cannot count the points now, you have to wait until after the game.

And you'll need a strong referee on the day, won't you?

The referee has experience so I don't have any problems with that. Ferguson was talking before and now he's talking about Ronaldo. He's clever, he's trying to do his job, but the referee has experience and I think it will be good.

You mention needing the protection for Torres. Do you think that at times this season this hasn't been the case?

I don't want to talk just about Torres. The skilful players must be protected, that's clear. We need to help referees and I have always said the same: use the videos. It will then be easier for the referees because, after the game, if they haven't seen something and you then use the videos, the players will know there's a camera watching them.

What responsibility do the players have as well, because we saw another incident of descent last night involving Ashley Cole? Just when the FA is trying to encourage referees to stay in the game, we see another case like that...

The example set by the managers and players is really important. A lot of people watch the games, a lot of kids.

Are there any measures that can be implemented?

For me the video is really important. That will make it really easy because you could make mistakes during the game, but afterwards the game would still be analysed.

Good news this week, Rafa, in that Daniel Agger's operation was a success...

Yes, the operation was good, so the player is okay and happier now. He's thinking about next season, or maybe if everything is okay the end of this season. But a player that has been away for a long time, normally he will not be available.

What exactly was the problem?

He has a very small bone at the second metatarsal and you could see it at the scan.

How much of a distraction is this international break going to prove in between these massive games?

I think if you play important games it's understandable, but friendlies? It's something I will never understand. When you are playing in the Champions League, when you are playing for the title or for a place in Europe, you can't understand players travelling all around the world.

Avram Grant this week spoke of the virtues of John Terry for England captain, but what about Steven Gerrard?

He's my choice. Clearly he has shown he's a more mature player now. He knows the role, knows what to do.

What would he bring to the role for England?

He is a fantastic player, so on the pitch he is an example. Off the pitch he is more mature now and knows his responsibilities. I think he's a very good captain.

So it wouldn't interfere with anything here at Liverpool?

No.

Any team news, Rafa?

No, Agger is not fit but the rest of the squad is available.

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Fernando Torres has expressed his delight at being named Match magazine's player of the month for February and warned the rest of the Barclays Premier League that there's more goals to come.
The Spanish hot-shot was on target four times in just two league appearances last month and has no doubt as to his own personal highlight from the matches against Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

"It would have to be my hat-trick against Middlesbrough," he said.

"I had never scored three goals in one game before I joined Liverpool, even in all my time with Atletico Madrid, so it was a great moment in my season and my career as a whole!

"We've been on a really good run as a team, and it's not just me who's been scoring - the goals are being shared around. It's easier to score goals and play well yourself when everyone is on form, and the team did that last month."

If February was a good month, then March looks like being a sensational one, as El Nino has followed up his previous exploits by firing his personal tally beyond the 20 league goal barrier.

And the bad news for the rest of the league is that he expects to maintain his rich vein of form.

"I hope to score many more goals for Liverpool this season," he said.

"Fortunately for me, I've been having a good year so far and I'm hoping the team can continue our good run of results right up unitl the end of the season."

The award is yet another accolade for a player who has taken the English league by storm in what is still his first season on these shores.

But rather than rest on his laurels, he is already planning to pick up more gongs to add to his growing collection and expects to stay at Liverpool for some years to come.

"This is a proud moment for me," he said.

"I'm especially happy as it's happened in a country outside my own, and I think thta makes success harder to achieve. I want to thank my teammates, because this award is for them as well.

"I'm certain everyone will have something to say, but I'm not sure what it will be yet. What I do know is that I'm going to be here at Liverpool for a while, so I'm hoping this will be the first of many awards I can win.

"I have a room in my house where I keep all the awards I've won in my career. The hat-trick balls I've picked up this season are in there now and I think this award will look really good sitting alongside them!"

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Dirk Kuyt has described Rafael Benitez as 'the best manager he has ever had' and aims to repay the Spaniard for his support by helping to fire Liverpool to more Champions League glory.
The Dutchman admits he has endured a difficult season following the death of his father last year but believes he can now see light at the end of the tunnel and feels he is about to prove just how important he can be to Liverpool's future.

"You always give your best as a player but sometimes you can have problems mentally," said Kuyt.

"It was difficult to concentrate on football after my father died but I feel it is all behind me now. Sometimes things just need time for you to recover.

"People don't know what is happening with players behind the scenes. Everybody knows I have had a hard time privately, and I am just coming out of it.

"I've played better in the past few games, I have scored a few important goals and I have provided a few assists.

"It was the first time anything like this had happened to me and it has made me only stronger. Now I feel much better than a few months ago, I want to carry on and show I am a good player."

Kuyt's recent upturn in form has seen him play a significant role in Liverpool's seven match winning streak - including a vital goal in a 2-0 win over Inter Milan - and he insists it was Benitez's support during the difficult times that helped him to come through it and he now wants to reward his manager with another European Cup success.

"It would be really special to repay him by winning the Champions League," continued Kuyt.

"He is a really great manager. In the period when it was hard for me, when I had some problems, he was there for me.

"That he cared what happened to me outside the pitch means a lot. He is the best manager I've had.

"Playing football has been like a medicine for me. When you play great games, such as against Inter Milan in the Champions League, you can devote all your energy to what happens on the pitch.

"Hopefully, I can keep going like this and we can do well in the league and Champions League. We lost the final last year, we definitely want to be there again this time."

While the Reds' hopes of a third Champions League final appearance in four seasons remains their only realistic chance of silverware this year, they must still maintain a push for fourth spot in the Premier League.

A 2-1 win over Reading has helped them to consolidate that position ahead of next weekend's crunch trip to Old Trafford and Kuyt feels it is about time Liverpool got a result that past performances have against United have not been rewarded by.

Kuyt added: "We were a bit unlucky in our recent games against United, so hopefully we will get that luck this time.

"It is unbelievable. We deserved something more from those games.

"I think when you are at Liverpool you want to win every game, and especially against Man United. It is a really big game coming up and we really want to show we can beat them.

"United have a quality team. Only in the past six or seven games have we shown it."

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Rafa Benitez believes the arrival of Fernando Torres is helping to make Steven Gerrard an even better player.
The pair, who now have a stat-busting 44 goals between them this season, are doing their best to revive memories of Dalglish and Rush after striking up a potent understanding.

They twice combined on Saturday to tear the Magpies apart, leaving Benitez in no doubt that his inspirational captain and record signing are bringing the best out of one another.

He said: "With the freedom he has now and his quality going forward, he's unstoppable. Stevie now has the same freedom he had as a right winger when he came inside.

"He's enjoying it because he knows he can go forward with no problem.

"The understanding with Fernando is also very good. He knows that when he goes forward he can pick him out easily.

"It could be that they bring out the best in each other.

"Of course he still needs to help out the midfielders but it's not the same as running back 30 or 40 metres.

"He knows what we expect from him and he is playing well in virtually every game. Every manager talks to their players about what to do but he is clever enough to know that."

Meanwhile, Benitez has reiterated his intention to rotate less over the coming months now his side are fighting on just two fronts.

He explained: "With us, for me the key is that because we only have two competitions to go for, I won't change too many players.

"So they have to work really hard to get into the team because of that. When the team's working so hard, it makes it difficult to create chances against us. From now until the end of the season we want to be competing, playing good football, controlling games and winning."

 Comments

STEVIE: ONLY OUR BEST WILL BE GOOD ENOUGH

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool will need to produce their best display of the season in Milan tomorrow night to book a place in Friday's Champions League quarter final draw.
To watch Stevie talking about Inter click here>>

Despite travelling to Italy with a 2-0 lead thanks to late strikes from Dirk Kuyt and Gerrard at Anfield three weeks ago, the Reds' skipper insists the tie is still far from over and that only another top class European away performance will suffice in the hostile atmosphere of the San Siro.

"Inter Milan are a top side and we know what a difficult task it is going to be to get through," said Gerrard. "We'll probably need to turn in our best performance of the season to do it. We'll need a really big display with every player fighting for every ball and showing everyone how desperate we are to go into the last eight.

"We can take heart from the game at Anfield, definitely. I know people might talk about the sending off but even before that we were looking the better side and putting them under great pressure.

"But we can't go there thinking we've got a 2-0 lead. We're going there with a mindset of it being 0-0 and us needing to produce another majestic European performance to get through.

"If we go there to defend then we'll be playing a very dangerous game and so we can't afford to do just that. If we just sit back then they could get a lucky goal or a decision in their favour and things could get difficult for us so that's why it's important to be positive, to take the game to them when we can and look to win it.

"I'm really confident we can do it. They are a top side but we feel as if we're a good team as well. We've got a good record on the road in Europe and if we play to our capabilities then we're a difficult team to beat.

"We really want to get into the quarter finals of this competition and we know it will send out a message to the other sides if we can knock out the Italian champions."

 www.liverpoolfc.tv/news
CMON we want another star on our flag.

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez was happy after his side's 3-0 win over Newcastle at Anfield maintained their winning run ahead of Tuesday's crucial Champions League second leg with Inter Milan.
Goals from Jermaine Pennant, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard helped make it five wins on the bounce for the Reds and Rafa felt it was the ideal preparation before they set off for Italy.

"You must be happy," said Rafa. "We needed to win and we scored three goals and kept another clean sheet. We were also able to rest some players as well so it was perfect."

Torres and Gerrard were both withdrawn midway through the second half, obviously with Inter in mind, but they had already done the damage. Torres scored his 25th of the season to make it 2-0 in the 45th minute and then he turned provider for his skipper just after the break, and Rafa was full of praise for the pair.

"Both Torres and Gerrard are playing well and that is important for us," said Rafa. "If they have the space, with the quality and pace they have, they can kill defenders.

"Torres' goal was really good, Gerrard and Torres have a really good understanding and the goal came at a crucial time because it almost killed the game off. That helped us play with more confidence in the second half.

"The first goal was lucky, but the team was controlling the game. We were passing the ball well, but they were defending well and it was difficult to create clear chances. Sometimes you need the first goal and then after that it's easier."

The Reds will fly to Italy on Monday and Rafa was happy to report there were no new injury concerns after this game.

He said, "Lucas finished the game a bit tired, but the team should be ok. I have confidence that Mascherano will be ok, but it is too soon to say."

Steven Gerrard today reflected on Fernando Torres' second hat-trick in successive Anfield games and declared: "He's frightening."
The Spanish star took his tally for the campaign to 24 with his third hat-trick of the season last night as Liverpool took full advantage of their game in hand to beat West Ham 4-0 and move into fourth place in the Premier League table.

"Fernando is frightening. From the opening home game of the season to Chelsea when he scored a cracker, he has been consistent all the way," said the skipper.

"He got off to a good start then and now he has hit 18 Premier League goals, the first person to do that here since Michael Owen. So far so good and hopefully he can continue like this right to the end of the season.

"He has pace, power and is very direct but the most important thing for us is his work rate. He hasn't come here as a star, he is chipping in with his work as well and when you get that from a player as well you cannot ask for much more."

Gerrard, who took his own tally for the season to 18 with the fourth goal of the game last night, was delighted to see the Reds move back above Everton in the table.

"I know I called for an improvement recently and the way the performances have gone I am obviously pleased," he added.

"We were all disappointed with the inconsistency at home but against West Ham we started to put that right.

"It was a good team performance, I said well done to all of them. But we have another big game on Saturday and we must keep doing this right to the end of the season.

"There is still a lot of pressure on us to get fourth place. This is now a massive month for us, it will be tough all the way now.

"It is important for us to continue our league form. We have won the last three and if we can beat Newcastle on Saturday we will be able to focus on a huge game away to Inter Milan on Tuesday. That's so important for us now."
Teams wont give him the room thy have. Next season.

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez was delighted after Fernando Torres' second hat-trick in consecutive home games helped his side seize the upperhand in the race for fourth place with an emphatic 4-0 win over West Ham at Anfield.
Torres made it 24 for the season with a superb treble, before Steven Gerrard capped a fine win with a superb fourth goal close to the end to take the Reds back above Everton into fourth place.

"We are playing with a lot of confidence now," said Rafa. "We started the season well, but at this crucial stage of the season we are playing really well and you can see the team operating as a team, that is really important.

"It was important to win tonight because we have been talking about this game in hand for a long time, but now when you see the points on the table it is much easier and better for the confidence.

"We have three more points and we are closer now, it depends on us. If we can beat Newcastle we will approach the Inter game with a lot of confidence."

Liverpool's run of form has coincided with Rafa turning to a 4-2-3-1 system that sees Gerrard, Babel, Kuyt and Torres in a four pronged attack, but Rafa thinks there is more to the improvement than the system alone.

"It is more than the system because we have used it in some games before," said Rafa. "We were talking the other day about Ryan Babel and how he needed to settle down, and also Torres is on fire. Some players are playing really well now and that is the difference for the team because everyone has confidence that we will score."

Torres was again the hero, becoming the first Liverpool player to score a hat-trick in consecutive home games in over 60 years, and Rafa revealed that El Nino almost never made the game and then was almost substituted before completing his treble.

"He had a small problem and our first thought was to rest him, but he was ok," said Rafa. "Just before he scored his third and I had told Crouch to get ready to go on and maybe Torres saw him and pushed himself harder.

"If he continues scoring goals I'm sure he will be a threat for all defenders, but he can give us more than that because the defenders might be thinking about him and give a chance to Babel, Gerrard, Kuyt or another."
A bit late but it's about time.

 Comments

RAFA CONFIDENT OF LONG ANFIELD STAY

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news Paul Eaton 02 March 2008

Rafael Benitez today spoke of his confidence that he will remain as Liverpool manager beyond the length of his current contract.
Benitez, who takes his side to Bolton for this afternoon's 1.30pm kick off, has 18 months left to run on his present agreement but believes he will be given the opportunity to sign a new deal and achieve his ambitions at Anfield.

"I have confidence I will be here for a long time - not just for two years," he said.

"I have 18 months left on my contract but I have a lot of confidence that it will be easier next season and I am sure the situation will change in the future.

"I have confidence that we are progressing in the right direction. The Javier Mascherano deal is done. Now we will do something with Peter Crouch and then with Sami Hyypia. That means we are progressing.

"At this moment the only thing I have in my mind is to progress with Liverpool and try to win titles.

"This year and in the future. I am not looking anywhere else. I am really pleased here now and I think we will improve the situation in the future and that's why I want to stay for longer.

"People ask me why I want to stay here. It's because I know we can improve, I know it's a massive club, it's a top side and we can progress.

"So I want to do my best and I think we can improve things."

 Comments

RAFA: WIN TURNS UP THE HEAT FOR FOURTH

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Rafael Benitez hailed his side's 3-1 success at Bolton and admitted it was vital to maintain a winning momentum in order to turn up the pressure on their rivals for fourth place.
An own goal from Jussi Jaaskelainen and second-half strikes from Ryan Babel and Fabio Aurelio keeps Liverpool well placed in the fight for the final Champions League berth and the Reds boss believes a victory in their midweek match at home to West Ham will give them the edge going into the final three months of the campaign.

"Every win is important but especially now with it being so close in the fight for fourth position," said Benitez.

"So to put other teams under pressure is important. If we can win our game in hand it will then depend on us.

"We can then go into the Newcastle game and the Champions League match with Inter with more confidence. It is really important that we keep winning."

After a nervy opening the Reds were gifted the lead when Jaaskelainen fumbled Gerrard's speculative shot into his own net.

It gave Liverpool the confidence to go on and secure a convincing victory and although Benitez admits he felt for the Bolton stopper, he believes the goal helped to settle his side down and enabled them to play, rather than battle, their way to three points.

"It was disappointing for the goalkeeper but good for us and sometimes these things happen," said Benitez.

"I said before the match that the team was really concentrated and was training well. In the first five minutes when we had problems with their free-kicks but after that I think the team played well. We were trying to keep the ball because we knew it would be more physical if we didn't keep possession, so the idea was to play with a high tempo."

Benitez also praised the impact of Ryan Babel who netted his eighth goal in a red shirt and was a constant menace throughout.

"I think it was a good game for him," said Rafa.

"He had plenty of space and he could get in behind defenders, he could go into one-on-one situations. They had to keep an eye on Torres and Gerrard and it gave Babel more freedom."

 Comments

BOSS: STEVIE'S COMMITTED TO THIS CLUB

Rafael Benitez has quashed suggestions that Steven Gerrard is unhappy at Liverpool and revealed his skipper has set his sights on more Champions League glory this season.
Earlier this week our inspirational midfielder stressed his frustration at Liverpool's inability to sustain a serious challenge for the title, but the boss insists his captain's opinion is a collective view amongst the squad and is confident that he is devoted to the Reds cause.

"Steven's commitment to this club is 100 per cent," said Benitez. "He was trying to show he was disappointed with our position in the league.
"I was talking with him before our last training session and he's really pleased with our position in the Champions League. It would be fantastic if we could win the Champions League this season.

"I was talking with him [Gerrard] and for Steven to play in this competition is amazing and the most important trophy that he has won is the Champions League in Istanbul.

"We are disappointed with our position in the league and we want to improve now. We cannot change things but we will try to improve in the league and also we are in the Champions League.

"I think we need to all share a responsibility for our position in the league, but again we cannot change the situation now. We just need to be ready for the next game against Bolton, try to win it and get three points then think about the next game against West Ham and keep going."

Benitez remains confident Liverpool will finish in that much-coveted fourth and final Champions League qualification spot and believes his side can secure a first win at the Reebok since Emile Heskey hit a late winner in a five-goal thriller back in 2002.

"I have confidence in my team," he said.

"Watching the team in the last week we have been training really well. This week we didn't have any international matches or midweek games so we could train really well. The commitment of the players was fantastic so I have a lot of confidence in the team.

"We will try to do our best in every game and we need to keep winning when we go to Bolton.

"We know their style of football. They play direct and are a physical team so we know it will be tough and playing at the Reebok Stadium in the past has been difficult for us. It will be tough but we have confidence because we are training well.

"They can play with two strikers or one striker. It doesn't matter too much because we know our idea and the most important thing is our team.

"We have a lot of games left to play including three before the Champions League against Inter Milan. That's a lot of games where we need to be focused and concentrate."

As far as team news is concerned, Daniel Agger is unlikely to start the match and could continue his fitness quest by featuring in Tuesday night's reserve clash against the Trotters at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington. Benitez will also make a late check on the fitness of Steve Finnan. Andriy Voronin is back in light training but won't be ready for the trip to the Reebok Stadium.
He dos'nt look like he is happy right now.

 Comments

MASCHERANO SIGNS FOUR YEAR ANFIELD DEAL

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Javier Mascherano today signed a permanent deal at Anfield and admitted: "This is the best moment in my career."
The Argentine international has put pen to paper on a four year contract with the Reds, bringing to an end one of the longest transfer sagas in recent years.

"I am very, very happy and now I can concentrate just on playing football," Mascherano told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"I said all along that I wanted to stay at Liverpool and now that I have signed I can say this is the best and the biggest moment in my career so far.

"From the first day I arrived at Liverpool the feeling was good and I knew this was where I wanted to play my football. It's good news for me and my family that everything is sorted and I know where my future is going to be. I just want to do my best for the fans and the people of the club.

"I am at a top side and I know I can win titles here. That's the big thing for me. I want to be at a club where we can win trophies and have success."

Manager Rafael Benitez was just as delighted to secure the services of the 23 year old midfielder.

"We must be really pleased with the situation now," said the boss. "He has been a key player for us since he has been here and now we know he can be a key player in our future.

"From the start we knew Javier was a player with quality and a fantastic mentality. We knew the player when he was in the reserves at River Plate but was playing for the senior national team and we had been monitoring his career since then.

"He is young but he has great experience having played for his country. We knew he would be a good signing for us.

"It's clear that he is one of the best midfielders in the world but he can get better with us. We now have a lot of good options in the centre of midfield and that's good news for the club."

Chief Executive Rick Parry, who worked painstakingly to finalise the deal, added: "Our overriding thought is that we are delighted to have signed a world class player on a long contract and I know Javier is thrilled too because he was keen to have his long term future resolved.

"I think this signing demonstrates two things. Firstly, that life at the club goes on despite all of the speculation to the contrary.

"And secondly it demonstrates in very large measure the ongoing commitment of the owners who once again have come good when funds have been needed."

 Comments

BENITEZ EXPECTS LESS ROTATION

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Rafa Benitez expects to use his rotation policy less in the coming months now Liverpool are fighting on just two fronts.
The Reds boss made only one change on Saturday from the Inter victory four days earlier – and that was enforced due to Jamie Carragher's suspension.

Asked if fans can expect fewer changes from game to game now Liverpool are out of both domestic cups, Benitez said: "I think so. It will depend on the players in the end, but we can keep some players playing more games now."

Saturday's 3-2 victory over Middlesbrough saw Liverpool temporarily leapfrog Mersey rivals Everton into fourth place – a state of affairs which was reversed on Monday night following the Toffees' win at the City of Manchester.

Benitez knows his side's game in hand at home to West Ham on March 5 will now be crucial if Anfield is to witness Champions League football next season.

The visit of the Hammers is one of three games before Liverpool travel to the San Siro on March 11, with a maximum nine points very much on the manager's agenda.

"Everton have a lot of confidence right now and it was a good win for them (on Monday), but it's a long race," said Benitez.

"Portsmouth, Villa, Everton, City and us will all be there. I'm not sure if it will go to the final game but I think a lot will depend on these three games we have in a row."

Meanwhile, Benitez has backed Fernando Torres to become the first Liverpool striker since Robbie Fowler in 1995-96 to bag 20 league goals in a season.

The Spanish superstar has so far netted 21 in all competitions – 15 of which have come in the Premier League.

With 12 league games remaining, Benitez his confident his record signing can go on to reach a much talked about milestone.

"Hopefully he will score more than 20 – that would be really good for us," he said. "If he doesn't have any more injuries I think he can do that.

"That would be amazing. He is a young player, a foreign player and a striker – we know how difficult it can be for these types of players but he has 21 now in all competitions.

"I don't really set targets. You just talk about scoring a lot of goals."

Torres is currently in line to become the most prolific debut season striker in Liverpool's post-war history. His average of a goal every 1.48 games is more than John Aldridge (a goal every 1.55 games), Ian Rush (1.63), Roger Hunt (1.65), Robbie Fowler (1.83), Michael Owen (1.91) and Kenny Dalglish (2) managed in their first full seasons.

Scarily, Benitez predicts that a player he already regards as one of Europe's finest could get even better.

"He wants to learn, he wants to improve," said the Liverpool boss of his countryman. "That's the key. He's a young player and wants to learn everything.

"He knows he can improve, and that's one of the reasons he decided to come here. He wanted to win trophies but he also knew he could improve here. That's important for the future and for him.

"He is one of the best in Europe but, like I say, he can improve. He will get better because his mentality is good. He can improve two or three things and they will make him much better. He knows what they are but it's better not to say because then the opponents will know."
About time too.

 Comments

HICKS: I AM NOT SELLING

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has insisted he is not planning to sell his stake in the club.
Hicks said in a statement: "Reports in the UK media that I am about to sell my stake in Liverpool Football Club, or to invite DIC to examine the club's books in preparation for such a sale - like other such reports planted in the UK press in recent weeks by parties with their own self-interested agenda - are absolutely and categorically false.

"The reality is that I am personally, professionally and financially committed to the club and its supporters, and that I will continue to honour that commitment to the best of my ability now and in the future."

www.liverpoolfc.tv/news

Fernando Torres reflected on his first hat-trick in the Premier League and dedicated his fantastic treble to Rafa Benitez.
The Spanish hit-man took his tally to 21 goals for the season in the 3-2 win over Middlesbrough and was full of praise for the manager that brought him into the Premier League.

"You cannot score three goals in a game without the help of your manager and your team-mates so I would like to thank them," said Torres.

"The manager signed me for Liverpool so I am really grateful for that, and he also works with me all the time trying to improve me and make me a better player.

"I think my game has already improved and will continue to improve under Rafa Benitez. The most important thing is that the team is successful, that is the only thing that matters.

"If I score some goals that help us to win things then I will be very happy, but it is all about the team.

"I came here to win things because I have never won anything as a senior player. I won medals when I was an under-16 and an under-19 player but that was a long time ago.

"Hopefully we will win something this season but if that does not happen then next season.

"I have signed a six-year contract so I am here for a long time and if things go well hopefully I will be here for even longer.

"I have 21 goals this season and that pleases me because it is my best season yet but I am not thinking about scoring 30 because what makes me most happy is when the team wins, not when I score."

The striker also revealed how special the feeling was for him to complete his hat-trick in front of the Kop.

"That made it even more special for me because the Kop is such a special place and it means so much to everyone associated with Liverpool Football Club," added El Nino.

"The fans have been fantastic with me since I first came to the club and I would like to thank them because their support has been a big help.

"Now everyone at the club has to focus on trying to finish in the top four so the win against Middlesbrough was a very important result for us."

 Comments

RAFA: THE KEY WAS TO WIN

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez was delighted after a Fernando Torres hat-trick paved the way for his side's 3-2 victory over Middlesbrough at Anfield on Saturday.
The result takes the Reds above their city rivals Everton and into fourth place and Rafa was particularly pleased with the performance given that it came just days after their titanic tussle with Inter Milan.

"I was really happy with the performance," said Rafa. "I think coming after a Champions League game the most important thing was to win.

"After we scored the third goal on the counter attack you could see that we could score more, but they put us under a bit of pressure because they have some good players in attack. The key for us was to win and we won."

Liverpool's victory was made possible by Fernando Torres' second hat-trick for the club and El Nino has now scored a magnificent 21 goals this term. Rafa had some special praise for his hotshot compatriot and gave an insight into why he brought him to the club.

"It's not easy for a foreign player in his first year, but he has done really well," declared Benitez. " In the summer we were looking at a number of options, but we chose Torres because he is young and hungry and we thought his game would suit the Premier League.

"It's always difficult to score more than 20 goals, but he has done it in his first season. We knew that he was a player with power and pace, he can kill defenders with his pace.

"I didn't have a target in mind for him, the main thing for a striker is to score goals, but they also need to give assists and create space for the other players. Torres' work rate is good and everything is positive now for him and for the club." www.liverpoolfc.tv/news
I don't know you win a game and theres no problem at Anfield any more.

Rafa Benitez spoke to the press ahead of the 'Boro clash, answering questions about everything from Daniel Agger's fitness and Xabi Alonso's future to whether the owners have congratulated him on the Inter win.
Here's what the boss had to say in full.

How is Daniel Agger?

I think Voronin is close, maybe two weeks. Skrtel is fit and can be available, and Agger is nearly fit. The doctor says he can play little by little, not 90 minutes, so we will start using him.

Will he play against Middlesbrough?

This weekend is too early for him. Maybe he is a possibility for Tuesday when the reserves play.

How worried have you been that the injury has taken so long to recover from?

We were really worried because he is a player with quality. Especially when we play at home, a defender can play and go forward, so he is really important. He was trying to do everything, the medical staff were trying to do everything. It was a strange situation.

Why has it taken so long?

He was training and was okay but then he felt something in a tackle and we had the experience of Xabi Alonso against Arsenal, when he felt something and had to go back, so we needed to be careful.

Everybody says what a difference the likes of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres make to Liverpool. Does Daniel Agger fall into that category of making a big difference to the team?

Yes, for two reasons. First because he has quality. He is a defender who can play the ball. The second reason is because you need to rest your defenders. Sami is 34 and has played more games than last season.

And does it affect the style of play if Daniel is not there?

As I said before, at home he is very important for us because if the other team is deep and compact, he can run with the ball between the midfielders, pass the ball and sometimes score.

Just talking about Sami. There was a line that he might go to Fulham in the summer. Any comment on that?

No, I am really pleased with him.

So he's not going anywhere for the moment?

No.

Just on Xabi Alonso. Is it a problem to keep him happy at the moment when he's not getting as much of a run in the team?

I think that when you have an important squad with good players, it is impossible to play all of them. If the team is playing well, you try to keep players in there who are doing the job. I am really pleased with Xabi, he is a key player for us, with quality, and he must compete for his position.

So it's a case of not wanting to let him go?

Yesterday I was talking with his agent about his future because I heard the rumours. I said he was a player for our future and he must compete for his position. I have four midfielders with different qualities and I like to be in this position. He has renewed his contract this year, it's a long contract, a good contract, so I think he is a key player for us now and in the future.

How can a team that loses to Barnsley beat one of the favourites for the Champions League?

That's football, you know. It's cup competitions. People can see the result against Barnsley or they can see the game. In the game we had lots of opportunities and it could have been different. Against Inter Milan we had fewer chances and scored two. That's football.

So you got the breaks against Inter that you didn't get against Barnsley and to a certain extent in the Premier league?

Yes, you know it's different. And also the atmosphere the other day was amazing. The supporters were behind the team from the beginning, and because it's a cup competition it's different – anything can happen.

Have you had much congratulations for the owners?

Yes, Mr Hicks sent emails saying well done to me and to the players and everyone. He has been very supportive in these last months.

But it's important to remember it's still only half-time in the tie?

Yes, we know. Everyone is talking about a good game and result, but there's another game and we have to go to the San Siro. We must be really, really careful.

How much of a lift would that goal have given Dirk Kuyt?

It was important for him because he's been working so hard but needed to score. He's scored two in the last two games and that's a big boost for him. Hopefully we will see more goals in the next few games.

Has it been a difficult time for him?

Yes, a striker always needs to score but his commitment is always 100 per cent in every game and training session. I was surprised the other day when he gave the ball away and then sprinted 20 metres to get it back – and this was right at then end of the game. That's amazing.

Has his father passing away had a big impact this season?

Yes, but his mentality is very positive. It's more about a lack of confidence because he wasn't scoring than the other things.

Let's look at Middlesbrough. They've got a knack of getting results against the top teams?

It will be a tough game, as always in the Premier league. Southgate is doing a good job because he doesn't have massive experience. He is clever and the team is well organised. They try to play football and are good at counter-attack. He knows what to do and so do the players.

What is it that happens so that a team like Middlesbrough can pull off results against the top sides but then struggle?

The mentality of the players sometimes when you play against important teams, the commitment is there.

What about yourselves between now and the end of the season – is the focus now on the Champions League?

We have two targets, clearly. One is the Champions League and the other is to finish in the top four. We have four games before Inter Milan and we must try to win these games.

But you'd settle for winning the Champions League and finishing outside the top four, wouldn't you?

Our idea is to think about these four games and after that Inter will be a very tough game. The key is to be sure we are in the top four.

Rafael Benitez believes Liverpool have a great chance of progressing to the last eight of the Champions League but warned that the tie is far from over after his side left it late to secure a 2-0 victory over Inter Milan.
Goals Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard have given the Reds a commanding lead to take to the San Siro for the second-leg in three weeks time and the Reds boss admits that the late strikes coupled with a clean sheet have put his side in the driving seat.

"We knew it was important not to concede if we wanted to have a chance in the second game," said Benitez.

"We then scored two goals, so in the end it was perfect because a clean sheet and two goals will mean it will be difficult for them but also they are a very good team so we must be careful."

Despite dominating for long periods Liverpool were left to rely on two goals in the final five minutes to see off the Italians, and despite seeing his team miss a whole host of chances, Benitez was convinced they would go on and clinch victory.

"I'm really pleased with the attitude of the players, for the supporters and the club," he said.

"I had confidence because the team was playing well. We had pressure and we were passing and passing the ball and trying to create chances and we knew that it could come late and in the end to score two goals was fantastic."

Roberto Mancini's side had put up a staunch rearguard action following the sending off of Marco Materazzi on 30 minutes and Benitez felt that the red card was almost a hindrance to his team as they struggled to break the deadlock, although he did feel his side should have had a penalty when Patrick Vieira handled in the box.

"We were playing against a good team ," continued Benitez.

"You could see that when they went down to 10-men they were well organised, defending well and also because they were trying to play on the counter-attack. So it was difficult because they are a good side."

"I think that the sending off was clear and so was the penalty. But you cannot change things after the game. We must be pleased with the result. It could have been different if we had scored early because 10 versus 11 and attacking, attacking. If they had needed to go forward, maybe we would have found more spaces."

The 2-0 success was a huge tonic to the Reds boss following the shock FA Cup defeat to Barnsley at the weekend, and he was quick to defend his team selection for the match against the Championship side, after the likes of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres returned to star against Inter.

"I have explained sometimes that you need to change players if you want to keep all the players fresh," he said.

"Against Barnsley we had 10 internationals. Today we were playing with different players because we had some injuries before and we needed to do it against a good team like Inter Milan. I think that the team can do these things because we have good players but to play like that for 10 months you need a bigger squad.

"It's a different competition and a different situation so I think that against Barnsley we created enough to win and we couldn't, but today it was more or less the same. Maybe we had less chances today and yet we scored two goals."

Benitez was also keen to quash any suggestions this was Liverpool's last hope of salvaging their season.

"I think we needed to win as a team because we want to progress in the competition," he said.

"For me as manager I am really pleased when we win and disappointed when we lose. But today is time to be happy."

"I think everyone knows how important the Champions League is. So to play these types of games against top sides in Europe is important for the club, the supporters and the players.
www.liverpoolfc.tv/news
Just got back from the match and i must say "What a super game of footie" best i've seen Liverpool play in a long time.

Steven Gerrard today admitted Liverpool will need to produce their best display of the season to beat Inter Milan at Anfield.
The two sides clash in the first leg of the Champions League last sixteen clash with the runaway Serie A leaders favourites to book their place in the quarter finals at the expense of Rafael Benitez's Reds.

Gerrard accepts he and his teammates face a daunting challenge this evening but he's confident Liverpool's recent history of knocking European giants out of the competition can be repeated again.

"To get the kind of result we need we are going to have to turn in maybe our best 90 minutes of the season. It is going to have to be one of those great performances," he said,

"They are a fantastic side. You have to be, to be so far ahead in the Italian league, as they are at the moment. They are odds-on to make it three titles in a row and that's a fantastic achievement for them.

"We will need to take our chances against them, and that's been one of the frustrations of the season for us. We have dominated games and created lots of good clear sights of goal, and we haven't taken them.

"It's not just about the strikers, it's the whole team who have been missing those opportunities and we have to change that.

"We need to make a good start to get us up for the trip to Italy. The San Siro isn't a place where you want to be chasing a result. In a perfect world we would score a couple of goals and keep it tight.

"But Inter don't concede many goals and they have got great players all over the pitch. So we will have to play well, we know that, and this is the type of game we normally respond in."

Meanwhile, Javier Mascherano has insisted he'll be forgetting about personal friendships during the 90 minutes of action this evening.

The Argentine midfielder will come up against international team-mates Javier Zanetti, Esteban Cambiasso and Julio Cruz tonight as the Reds look to bounce back from defeat at the weekend with a morale boosting victory over the Nerrazzuri.

"They are my team-mates for my country but my job is to stop Inter Milan's players," he said.

"When I play for Liverpool, I don't have any friends in the opposing side.

"When I go out on to the pitch, when I get my mind into playing mode, I forget about everything except winning.

"If that means getting myself between the ball and people who are friends off the pitch, then that is just the way it is."
www.liverpoolfc.tv/news
Well off to the game again tonight. Don't feel good about this game. Inter are a much better team then Barnsly so whats the score going to be tonight?.

Rafael Benitez has reported no fresh injury concerns ahead of the Reds' clash with Inter Milan tomorrow night.
Only Daniel Agger and Andriy Voronin are definitely ruled out with both Fernando Torres and Martin Skrtel having recovered from knocks in time to figure against Roberto Mancini's side.

The Liverpool team trained at Anfield this morning as they finalised their preparations for the first leg of their Champions League last sixteen clash.

"The mood of the players is really good, probably better than people expect," said Benitez.

"Physically and mentally they are ready for the game on Tuesday. We have prepared well and I am confident we will be ready for a good performance.

"We know it will be difficult because Inter Milan are a good side who have won a lot of games this season, but we know that on our night we can beat anybody at Anfield and the players know what they have to do."

Asked if he had a message for the supporters after the disappointment of Saturday's Cup exit at the hands of Barnsley, he replied: "At Liverpool the fans say you will never walk alone and I am sure they will be behind us on Tuesday night.

"We know it will be another great atmosphere and I am sure they will play their part. We need their backing and their support."
Is this going to be Rafa's last chance to keep his job.?
